Dev Deepawali 2026 Varanasi: What to Wear | Banarasi Saree Guide

Dev Deepawali 2026 Varanasi: What to Wear | Banarasi Saree Guide

Every year, around the middle of November, our phones start buzzing with the same message: "Coming to Banaras for Dev Deepawali. What should I wear?"

It sounds like a simple question. It isn't. Because Dev Deepawali isn't a party, and it isn't a puja in your living room. It's an evening on stone steps, in a crowd of lakhs, on a wooden boat, beside an open flame, under a full moon and then, inevitably, in a hundred photographs you will look at for the rest of your life.

We've grown up on these ghats. Here's what we tell our own friends and family.

First, the Basics: When Is Dev Deepawali 2026?

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November Kartik Purnima, the full moon that closes the holy month of Kartik. It comes sixteen days after Diwali, which is on Sunday, 8 November this year.

The night before, Monday 23 November, is Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, kept at Kashi Vishwanath. And Chhath Puja (13–16 November) lands on the same ghats just a week earlier so many families are planning one long Kashi trip this year instead of two.

Dev Deepawali also coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti, which is why you'll see the whole city  not just one community  out on the riverfront that night.

What happens: At dusk, around 5:15 PM, diyas begin to be lit along all 84 ghats, from Assi to Rajghat. The grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh follows. For 2026, the state has announced more than 11 lakh diyas  including nearly 1 lakh made of cow dung along with a laser show and green fireworks. Last year, with residents and local committees joining in, the count went far beyond the official target.

Why it's celebrated: Dev Deepawali marks Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura. On this night, it is believed, the gods themselves descend to bathe in the Ganga and Kashi lights every step of the river to welcome them. It is, quite literally, the Diwali of the Gods.

Why Your Saree Choice Matters More on This Night Than on Diwali

On Diwali, you're dressing for a room. On Dev Deepawali, you're dressing for three very different things at once:

  1. Light. Lakhs of tiny flames, all warm and golden, all at ground level. Some fabrics drink this light. Some fabrics throw it back.
  2. Movement. Ghat steps, narrow gallis, boarding a boat, sitting cross-legged for the aarti. A saree that fights you will ruin the evening.
  3. The camera. Let's be honest  this is one of the most photographed nights in India. Your saree will be in the frame with the river, the diyas and the moon.

That's where Banarasi has an unfair advantage. Real zari is metal-wrapped thread. Under diya light, it doesn't just look gold it glows, catching every flame around you. No printed or polyester "Banarasi" can do that.

The Mantavya Guide: Which Saree for Which Part of the Evening

If you're watching from the ghat steps Kora Tissue or Classic Tissue Silk

Tissue silk is woven with zari in the weft itself, so the whole fabric has a soft metallic sheen. On the ghats, surrounded by diyas, this is the fabric that photographs as if it's lit from inside.

It's also light. You'll be climbing steps and standing for a long time and a tissue silk saree won't weigh you down the way a heavy brocade does.

Our pick: Pastel or jewel-toned Pure Tissue Silk Sarees lavender, peach and teal look magical against the orange of the diyas. A Kora Tissue Saree is the lightest, most crowd-friendly option.

If you've booked a boat → Katan Silk, in a deep colour

From the river, you're seeing the ghats; the ghats are seeing you as a silhouette against the water. Deep colours  bottle green, royal blue, wine  hold their own in low light, while pale colours can wash out.

Katan silk is pure silk with a firm, rich hand. It holds its pleats when you're stepping in and out of a boat, and its zari reads clearly even from a distance.

Our pick: Katan Silk Sarees in bottle green or royal blue. Pair with a full sleeve blouse on the river after sunset, you'll be glad you did.

If you're attending the aarti up close → A traditional red, or an auspicious shade

The Dashashwamedh aarti is a devotional moment first and a photo moment second. Many women from Kashi families wear red, maroon or deep pink — colours of shubh and saubhagya.

Our pick: Our hand-embroidered tissue silk sarees from the Diwali Collection  like Gajraaj, inspired by the royal elephant motif, or Maharani Gaj. Hand embroidery gives texture that looks rich in person and in close-up photographs.

If it's your first Dev Deepawali as a couple → A personalised saree

We've seen it many times: newlyweds who choose Dev Deepawali as their first trip together. If that's you, this is the night for a saree with your names or a vow woven in zari on the pallu  something you'll wear again, and remember exactly where you first wore it. What Nobody Tells You: 6 Practical Tips From Locals

1. Keep your pallu away from the diyas. This is the most important one. You'll be bending to light or float a diya, and a loose pallu near an open flame is a real risk. Pin your pallu securely, or drape it in the seedha pallu style across the front so it doesn't trail behind you.

2. Choose a fall that clears the steps. Ghat steps are wet near the water and often have oil from the diyas. Get your saree draped an inch higher than usual, so the hem doesn't drag.

3. Carry a shawl  November evenings near the river turn cold. Days are warm, but after sunset, on a boat on open water, it gets chilly. A Banarasi dupatta or a pashmina over your saree looks better than a cardigan in photographs.

4. Wear flat or block-heel footwear. You'll walk more than you expect — roads close to vehicles near the river on Dev Deepawali, and you'll likely be on foot for the last kilometre or more.

5. Skip heavy brocade for a long evening. A heavy bridal brocade is beautiful, but four hours on the ghats in a crowd is a different thing. Tissue and Katan give you the same richness with far less weight.

6. Go back the next morning. The morning after Dev Deepawali, the ghats are quiet and the burnt-out diyas are still on the steps. It's the best light of the whole trip — and the most beautiful saree photographs you'll take.

How to Make Sure Your "Banarasi" Is Actually Banarasi

Dev Deepawali brings lakhs of visitors to Varanasi — and every year, many go home with a powerloom saree sold as handwoven. If you're buying in Banaras this season, check the reverse side for floats and irregularities (a sign of handwork), look for the GI tag, and buy from someone who will tell you exactly which weave and which zari you're paying for.

We've written detailed guides on this: Real vs Fake Banarasi Saree: 7 Expert Tests and How Banarasi Sarees Got the GI Tag.

Coming to Kashi? Come and See the Weave

If you're in Varanasi for Dev Deepawali, you're closer to the looms than almost any shopper in the world. Mantavya Banaras is in Mahmoorganj, Varanasi — message us on WhatsApp before you visit, and we'll keep a selection ready for you.

And if you can't make it to Kashi this year — light a row of diyas at your doorstep at dusk on 24 November, wear your Banarasi, and let a little of the ghats come to you.
